Survivor Stories
After the 2013 return of the artworks to the artists and/or their families, many Survivors chose to return their paintings to the University of Victoria, as part of a new relationship to share their stories and build better understanding of the history and legacy of residential schooling. Soon afterward, they reached out to the Canadian Museum of History. In 2015, the group travelled to Ottawa-Gatineau to participate in the final event of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and filmed oral histories at the Museum about their paintings and experiences. Each painting and artist has truths to share about their past, and some artists also share their perspectives on the future.
