Whaling was very important to the subsistence of the Thule, the ancestors of the Inuit. In the 13th century, however, whaling activities began to decline because the climate became colder, modifying the distribution area of whales and forcing some Inuit to turn to other species. Those who lived along the coast of Labrador were less affected by the climate change; in the New France era, whaling still played a significant role in their culture.
