In the early 16th century, relations between the Inuit and the Europeans who frequented
the coasts of southern Labrador, in particular to hunt whales, appear to have been
relatively friendly. Over the years, however, they became tense and marked by reciprocal
acts of violence. A series of unfortunate incidents, including the murder of an Inuit
woman and European fishermen, seems to have triggered a crisis.
