At the end of the 17th century, French settlers who received concessions on the North Shore to fish and hunt seals sought more harmonious relations with the Labrador Inuit. In vain. In their efforts to establish normal commercial relations, they faced an insurmountable barrier of distrust generated by the violent episodes of the previous years.
