To understand what happened to Africville and its residents, it’s important to do some research about the community, from its foundation to its demolition in the 1960s.

Read some of the background information given in this package as well as the Historica Canada article titled “Africville.” Use the information you’ve read about Africville to answer the following questions:

  1. What was life like for Black people in Canada when Africville was established in the mid-18th century?
  2. How do you think people viewed Africville from its inception until it was demolished in the 1960s?

 

Activity: After students complete their research on Africville, they should create their own timelines of important dates/events about Africville, based on the research they did and the video they watched.

This video shows the history of Africville, a Black community on the outskirts of Halifax, Nova Scotia, that was first settled in the 1700s. The video describes how the community was built, who lived there, the services, schools and churches Africville’s residents built — in particular the Seaview African United Baptist Church, described as “the beating heart of the community” — and the injustices Africville’s residents experienced.

The City of Halifax demolished Africville in the late 1960s, in what many have said was an act of racism. For many people, the community of Africville represents the oppression faced by Black Canadians, and the efforts to right historic wrongs.
