In the New France era, the French occasionally came into contact with the eastern Inuit, those of southern Quebec-Labrador, who also frequented the lower North Shore in the 17th century. The following century, however, the Inuit slowly withdrew to the North, especially when France started granting concessions along the North Shore and the number of fishing and seal hunting properties began to increase.
