The Guides
The guides - the most indispensable of camp employees.
 ince the object of
camp members and guests was to catch fish, the guides formed a
very important labour pool. Their knowledge of the river and
fish habits was eagerly sought. Often, it was the guide's skill
that determined whether a fish would actually be landed through
the gaff and the net, his tools of the trade. There was also the
skill at handling a canoe and the brute strength required to
propel it by pole or paddle against the current. Guides might be
of European or aboriginal descent, and their working
relationships with particular camps could be longstanding with
several generations from the same family represented in turn.
