In India, art is considered an essential part of life and society. The ephemeral aspect of Indian arts is linked with the cyclical concept of time.

Known by various names (aripona in Bihar, alpona in Bengal, kolam in Tamilnadu and rangoli in western India), geometrical designs or diagrams are drawn daily on the doorsteps or in the courtyards of houses, and on temple floors for special worship, in both the city and the country. The designs greet the dawn, beautifying and protecting the family or holy place.

Dots are first laid out in geometric patterns using white powder, usually limestone or rice powder. Designs of great complexity are then added, according to traditions transmitted from mother to daughter. Floral or animal motifs are sometimes woven into the compositions, but the power of the diagrams is in their complex geometry.
