The Home
Art in India is never far removed from life, intimately tied
as it is either to religion, aesthetics, or utility.

The home is the staging area where all encounters
with the wider world are planned and prepared. The life cycle rites of
birth, maturity, marriage and death are all played out against a
backdrop of artistic skills, often transmitted from elder to younger
female relatives. Religious rituals extend from household shrines to
great community or regional centres.
Artisans often work in their
homes, on their verandas and in courtyards, situating the creative
act at the heart of the family, whose younger members will
carry it on.
