THE ARTS OF DEVOTION STONE

Because of its association with architecture and the famous historic monuments, stone carving has had a celebrated history among the arts of India. The names of the skilled cutters who built and decorated the stupa at Sanchi, the Sun Temple at Konarak or the Taj Mahal at Agra have, for the most part, been forgotten, but their descendants continue a great tradition. Today, Indian stone carvers create components for new temples, mosques and other buildings throughout the country and around the world. They constantly renovate and repair existing structures, and now supply a vast new market, members of the middle class who can afford to decorate their homes or businesses with carved stone.
