Three unique offers to celebrate Black History Month

Published

Feb. 10, 2025

This year, celebrate Black History Month at the Canadian Museum of History with three very special activities.

Special display: Shaping Canada’s History

The public can learn more about the Black Canadians who have helped shape Canada’s history and enrich its culture, through a new special display. Featuring a curated selection of objects from the Museum’s collection, the four display cases tell powerful stories of creativity, determination, perseverance, and resistance that have made Canada more inclusive, diverse, culturally vibrant, and internationally renowned. From the social activism of Viola Desmond to the musical virtuosity of Oscar Peterson, the world championship achievements of Donovan Bailey, the resilience of Black Nova Scotian communities, and the contributions of new Black Canadians, their legacies have shaped our history and continue to inspire the future.

Date: Until Monday, February 24
Location: Special Exhibitions Corridor

A webinar for teachers: Black Canadian History – Teaching Through Community Stories

The Museum will also offer a free webinar for teachers. Teachers are invited to join curriculum specialists and community experts in Black Canadian history for ideas on how to incorporate the history and contributions of the Black Canadian community into their lesson plans. This presentation is aimed primarily at educators working with grades 7 through 12 (secondary 1 to 5 in Quebec).

Date: Friday, February 14 at 1 p.m.
Tickets: Free for registered participants

An Evening With Bruny Surin, Hosted by Meeker Guerrier

The public is invited to an unforgettable night of inspiration and conversation with Olympian Bruny Surin and sports commentator Meeker Guerrier. In addition to looking at Surin’s life as a track star, the discussion will explore his post-competition business ventures and his experiences as Chef de Mission at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The event includes a Q&A period with the public and is presented by TD Bank Group through the Bank’s Corporate Citizenship platform, the TD Ready Commitment.

Date: Wednesday, February 26 at 7 p.m.
Location: Theatre
Tickets: $15 for adults; $10 for youth, students and seniors; free for members (registration required).
