For immediate release

Gatineau, Quebec, February 25, 2014 — From February 28 to April 27, explore the history behind three coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2013 to commemorate the Canadian Arctic Expedition, 1913–1918, with the display Celebrating Canada’s Arctic at the Canadian Museum of History.

The Canadian Arctic Expedition, 1913–1918, was the first major scientific journey to Canada’s North. Ultimately, it redrew the map of the Arctic and expanded our understanding of its environment and cultures. The Expedition team amassed thousands of photographs, films and cultural objects that are an invaluable part of Canada’s heritage and this Museum’s collections.

Celebrating Canada’s Arctic highlights Expedition photographs from the Museum’s archives, as well as Aboriginal objects, such as those in its archaeology holdings, that honour past and present Aboriginal cultures. Displayed alongside objects that inspired them, the coins can be compared with photos and memories of the Expedition, preserved in the Museum’s collections.

Last year, the Royal Canadian Mint released 25 million 25-cent commemorative coins celebrating the Arctic Expedition and Life in the North. Look for them in your change, or exchange a coin for the commemorative ones at the Museum’s Boutique (while quantities last).

Celebrating Canada’s Arctic is presented at the Canadian Museum of History in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Mint from February 28 to April 27, 2014.
