Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation welcomes appointment of new President and CEO

Gatineau, Quebec, June 27, 2011 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is pleased to welcome Mark O’Neill as its new President and CEO. His appointment was announced today by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable James Moore. Mr. O’Neill has held executive positions with the Corporation for the past 10 years, serving most recently as Director General of the Canadian War Museum, Corporate Secretary and Vice-President of the Corporation.

The Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation is comprised of the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canadian War Museum. Together, they are Canada’s national museums of human and military history and the largest and most-visited cultural institutions in the country. Both are located in the National Capital Region. 

“I am honoured by this opportunity to lead such a vital and vibrant national institution,” said Mr. O’Neill. “I am also keenly aware of the Museums’ long and proud service to Canada through their protection and promotion of heritage, and their fostering of a deeper understanding of our history by all Canadians.”

Mr. O’Neill began his career in the public service in 1986, holding various managerial positions within Canadian Heritage. 

Mr. O’Neill’s appointment was welcomed by the Corporation’s Board of Trustees through its Acting Chair, Mr. André E. Audet. “Mr. O’Neill has served the Corporation with distinction for many years,” said Mr. Audet. “His knowledge of the institution, dynamism, and his belief in the importance of its mandate will serve him well as he assumes his new responsibilities.” 

“The Board and I look forward to working with Mark as he takes on his new duties,” added Mr. Audet.

Mr. Audet also expressed the Board’s sincere thanks to Mr. David Loye, who served as Acting President and CEO since the retirement in May of Dr. Victor Rabinovitch.
