Gatineau, Quebec, July 3, 2019 — The Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), managed by the Canadian Museum of History, is proud to announce its investment in 27 new online projects by Canadian museums and heritage organizations. Ranging from virtual exhibits to virtual tours, on subjects as diverse as St. Lawrence River whales and agriculturally inclined nuns, these online products will engage and inspire users of all ages.

“The Virtual Museum of Canada is a vital driver behind the creation of engaging, content-rich user experiences by museums and heritage organizations in this country,” said Mark O’Neill, President and CEO of the Museum of History. “VMC investment boosts professional development, promotes knowledge-sharing, and showcases collections and stories from coast to coast to coast.”

VMC-funded projects present Canadian history, heritage and culture to the rest of the world. As in previous years, each project receives support through one of two investment streams. Virtual Exhibits provides medium- and large-size investments to develop online products, while Community Stories provides small investments, and an exhibit template, to help smaller institutions work with their communities to share important local and regional stories.

This year’s approved projects cover diverse and powerful topics, from the impact of local industry on small towns to the struggles and triumphs of women in the workforce. Artists, activists, sailors and residential school survivors are just some of the compelling voices featured. Once completed, projects will be available on the VMC’s website (virtualmuseum.ca).

The VMC’s current Call for Proposals opened on June 19. Eligible organizations are invited to submit a proposal for funding under the Virtual Exhibits investment stream. The next Call for Proposals for Community Stories will open in November 2019.
