Manitoba arts supporter Jean Giguère joins Board of Trustees, Canadian Museum of History

Gatineau, Quebec, January 9, 2014 — The Canadian Museum of History is pleased to welcome Jean Giguère of Winnipeg to its Board of Trustees. Ms. Giguère has a long and distinguished record of leadership and achievement within the Canadian cultural community. Her appointment was announced by the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, the Honourable Shelly Glover.

Ms. Giguère currently serves as Chair Emeritus of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Co-chair of Culture Days Manitoba. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, a Director of Canadian Business for the Arts and a member of the Culture Days National Executive Committee.

“Ms. Giguère’s commitment to the arts, her experience in board governance and her success in building partnerships at the provincial and national level make her a very welcome addition to our Board of Trustees,” said Lieutenant-General (Ret’d) Bill Leach, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of History. He noted that Ms. Giguère is the first Trustee appointed to the Board since the Canadian Museum of History was given its new name and mandate.

Ms. Giguère was first elected to the Board of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet in 1997. She has served as Board Chair, Chair of the Development Steering Committee and member of the Strategic Organizational Review and Board Governance committees. She was appointed Chair Emeritus in 2010. At the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, Ms. Giguère has served as Vice-President responsible for fundraising, Chair of Special Events and member of the Executive, Nominating and Sponsorship committees.

On the national stage, Ms. Giguère served for five years on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Arts Summit and chaired the 2009 Summit in Montréal. She helped establish Culture Days as a national phenomenon and will chair the National Culture Days Congress in 2014. She has served since 2009 on the Board of Business for the Arts, a national organization that builds bridges between the arts community and the private sector.

The Canadian Museum of History operates the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian War Museum and the Virtual Museum of New France. Together, these Museums function as centres for research and public information on the history of Canada. Their principal role is to enhance Canadians’ knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the events, experiences, people and objects that have shaped Canada’s history and identity.
