Canadian Museum of Civilization shows there’s a lot to love about Valentine’s Day Ball

Gatineau, Quebec, January 22, 2009 – The Canadian Museum of Civilization today provided a sneak peek today at its upcoming Valentine’s Day Ball, and showed why the event is not just for grownups. Proceeds from the evening allow the Canadian Museum of Civilization and its sister institution, the Canadian War Museum, to support and enhance important programs for children and youth.

The Ball offers guests a romantic evening of fine dining and dancing in the Museum’s spectacular Grand Hall, as well as an opportunity to support a very worthy cause.

“We place a high priority on educational programs because young people represent Canada’s future,” said Dr. Victor Rabinovitch, President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation. “In these economically challenging times, it is more important than ever to continue offering high-quality programming, which opens children’s eyes to the world.”

Grade 3 students from York Street Public School, in Ottawa’s Lowertown neighbourhood, were on hand today to describe their recent class trip to the Museum of Civilization.

“Last year’s Ball raised more than $57,000 for programming to enhance the museum experience for thousands of young visitors, including the students who are with us today,” said Francine Brousseau, Vice-President of Development. “We hope this year’s Valentine’s event will also help the two Museums expand and strengthen their educational programs,” added Joy Noonan, Chair of the Valentine’s Day Ball and a prominent Ottawa mediator/arbitrator with Aptus Conflict Solutions.

Today’s preview had the Museum’s Executive Chef, Georges Laurier, unveil the superb multi-course dinner he has planned for the special evening. The menu’s theme, “A Dash of Love and Laughter,” gave him free rein to have some fun with the fine dining concept. The result is a feast inspired by comfort food with a gourmet twist and a touch of whimsy.

“By applying the concept of classic cuisine to kids’ favourites, I’ve created a menu appealing to adults to make the ordinary sublime,” Chef Laurier explained while showing off the last course, a Chocolate Tic-Tac-Toe that’s as much fun to play with as it is to eat.

The support of partners, including the Ottawa Citizen, Le Droit, Rock Détente and Food Mode Magazine is essential to the Valentine’s Day Ball.
