Traditional birch-bark canoe workshop
Gatineau, Quebec, July 20, 2007 — On July 28 and 29, join accomplished traditional canoe-builder, artist and craftsman Daniel “Pinock” Smith at the Canadian Museum of Civilization for an interesting workshop on building birch-bark canoes. Pinock will demonstrate Anishinabeg techniques for making canoes with natural materials taken from the environment, and participants will have the opportunity to create their own canoe using these traditional methods.Daniel Smith was born and resides in the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community near Maniwaki, Quebec. For the last 21 years, he has been sharing his knowledge of traditional techniques through his work, which includes masks, sleds, paddles, assorted drums, snowshoes and totem poles.
