A Japanese celebration of longevity for little ones at the Canadian Children’s Museum
Gatineau, Quebec, October 31, 2006 – On November 10, the Canadian Children’s Museum in the Canadian Museum of Civilization holds a special festive day for preschoolers to celebrate Shichi go san, just as they do in Japan on November 15. This matsuri or festival celebrates the health and longevity of 3 and 5 year old boys and 3 and 7 year old girls.A special guest from the Japanese community, Masayo Gardener, will be in the Japanese house showing young visitors how to make origami paper cranes, a symbol of longevity. She will be wearing a traditional kimono and will help children try on some of the traditional clothing children wear in Japan during this special celebration. Note that this activity is designed for children under 5.
