Curator to speak on importance of Canadian nurses
May 4, 2006Curator of first-ever national show on history of Canadian nursing to speak on importance of Canadian nurses during National Nursing Week at the Canadian Museum of Civilization
Gatineau, Quebec, Thursday May 4, 2006 The curator of A Caring Profession: Centuries of Nursing in Canada will give the keynote address on Making Nurses Visible at the annual Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) dinner on May 10 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization. This year’s dinner, part of National Nursing Week (May 8 to 12), is being held exceptionally at the Museum in honour of its landmark exhibition, A Caring Profession the first ever to explore the impact of nurses in Canada over the centuries.
For Christina Bates, curating A Caring Profession and co-authoring the accompanying book, On All Frontiers: Four Centuries of Canadian Nursing, accomplished exactly what Ms. Bates will speak about on May 10: making nurses visible. “In the country’s remote regions, on battlefields and beyond, nurses often were the only healthcare professionals available. It still amazes me that it took so long for the public to truly celebrate, see and appreciate the vital role nurses played and still play in our well-being,” says Ms. Bates. “No one can deny that Canadian nurses are, always have been and will remain, the pillars of our healthcare system.”
To date, A Caring Profession: Centuries of Nursing in Canada has welcomed more than 130,000 visitors. The exhibition will be on display until July 30, 2006 (new closing date). More information about this exhibition is available online at https://www.historymuseum.ca/cmc/nursing/nursee.html. .
Nurses and friends of nursing who are interested in hearing Christina Bates speak and who would like to attend the dinner can register for $125 per person at: http://rnao.ets.net/Storage/15/992_Region_10_Nursing_Week_dinner_06.pdf. .
