Gatineau, Quebec, May 4, 2006 In honour of National Nursing Week, celebrated this year from May 8 to 12, the Canadian Museum of Civilization invites you to join us on May 6 for a discussion with Brigitte Violette on nursing in New France. Presented in conjunction with the exhibition A Caring Profession: Centuries of Nursing in Canada, this discussion is part of the Museum’s Coffee & Conversation series.Brigitte Violette, Parks Canada Historian, will talk about nursing in New France and Quebec and how it was based on the French Catholic model of care giving. Ms. Violette will delve into several themes, including early hospitals, the Augustines’ knowledge of the pharmaceutical profession, the impact of Catholic values on nursing care, whereby nurses cared for both body and soul, and healthcare as a social welfare institution, which provided for the sick and gave aid to the poor.
