Canadian Museum of Civilization invites public to participate in gigantic mural

Gatineau, Quebec, February 28, 2006 — The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday, May 14, 2006 with an Open House to which all are invited. As part of these celebrations, the CMC is joining forces with the Human Mozaïk, an artists’ collective created in 2003 by photographer-artist Jean René, to produce an immense mural entitled Mozaïk Civilization.

The Human Mozaïk is an art activity grounded in a community approach and designed to give residents of the region and visitors a chance to take part in the creation of a work of art. The Human Mozaïk specializes in the creation of murals through digital photography. Dozens of people of all ages and cultures are photographed and pixelated to become part of a vast mural that is installed in the urban environment.

To celebrate its 150th anniversary in spectacular style, the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Human Mozaïk are inviting the first 150 members of the public who respond to participate in a photo session, complete with professional make-up and hairstyling, to be wrapped in coloured fabric and photographed by Jean René and the artists of the Mozaïk. They will then become part of the colour palette and their image will be a pixel, used to compose the final image made of two faces. These two faces will represent the cultural diversity that characterizes Canada. The mural will be on display on the four-floor façade of the administrative building of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. It will be installed in early May and stay on display until the end of December 2006.

All interested participants should leave their name and phone number on the RSVP line at (819) 776-8382. Participation will be on a “first come, first served” basis. The deadline is March 15. CMC staff will give the first 150 respondents further details on the activity, which will take place in the Waterfall Court on Saturday, March 25 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Mozaïk Civilization is made possible thanks to the generous support of ideal roofing Company Ltd Manufacturers, an Ottawa-based firm.
