Two Piece Glazed Cupboard

This cupboard was designed in the British tradition, with two doors featuring “fielded” or raised panels that fit flush to the frame rather than being lapped as in the Germanic tradition. The rectilinear design and orderly proportions are balanced by the cut-out shaping of the base. It is remarkable that the painted finish remains in such good condition and that the maker added his signature and date. Found on a century farm belonging to the Graham family, the cupboard’s survival speaks to the cultural roots of many British immigrants during the formative years leading up to Confederation.
