Two Fraktur Drawings
Artist Anna Weber emigrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1825 to Waterloo County, Upper Canada. Following the deaths of her parents, in 1854 and 1864, she was housed by various members of the local Mennonite community. During this period, she developed her love of art and created numerous small drawings that incorporated traditional Germanic motifs, such as tulips, various birds and farm animals. Many were made for friends and host families, including Fraktur drawing CMH 2007.22.197, which was made for Lidia Brubacher. Weber’s work, which was always signed and dated, is appreciated for its balanced composition and colour.
