The Life of Man from the Cradle to the Grave
This painting, which illustrates the story of “The Life of Man,” is often referred to as a metamorphosis book. Thomas MacDonald was an itinerant artist who arrived from Scotland in 1819. He travelled throughout the St. John River Valley, documenting the lives and times of New Brunswick’s more prosperous residents. Most of his portraits date from the 1820s and 1830s, and are appreciated for their lively colours and attention to detail. Read the transcript.
