The style of this watercolour is very much in the English tradition, reflecting D'Almaine's roots. In 1834 he painted a series of similar portraits, of the Wagstaffe family, which were acquired by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum. The collection includes a portrait of another gentleman with an almost identical background. This painting probably dates from the same period. Most of D'Almaine's paintings have been found in the United States, where he died in 1893.
