Overshot Coverlet

Overshot coverlets were commonly produced in many communities across Canada, with the exception of Quebec communities. They were generally woven on four shaft looms versus looms of up to twenty shafts for the more complex doublecloth and jacquard coverlets. Consequently, they were easier to produce and much more affordable to purchase. Samuel Fry, who made this example about 1875, typically sold overshot coverlets for about three-quarters of the cost of a fine doublecloth coverlet. The use of the bright red reflects the increased availability of colours and commercial dyes as the 1800s progressed.
