Jacquard Coverlet

The introduction of the jacquard loom in the early 1800s revolutionized weaving by facilitating the production of complex patterns through the use of punched or cut cards that guided the weaving process. The first use of a jacquard loom in Canada was in 1834, by Wilhelm Armbrust at his shop near Jordan, Ontario. He, like other early weavers, prepared his own patterns and cut the cards for his loom. The suspended heart between two pillars in the cartouches or corner panels was often used by Armbrust to mark his work.
