Fireplace Mantel
This mantel was removed from the parlour of the house built for The Reverend William Jenkins, in 1827, on Kennedy Road just north of Unionville, Ontario. The design was inspired by the architectural features of mantels in the finer houses of England and Scotland during the late 1700s. Carved paterae, such as the oval and circular examples shown here, were first popularized by British designers Hepplewhite and the Adam brothers. This mantel may have provided some familiar comfort to Reverend Jenkins, who was born and educated in Scotland, as he settled into his new home.
