Carved Bird in Flight
Perhaps a representation of the Holy Ghost, this carved bird was the largest of three mounted above the altar in a church in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. The deeply carved feathers and prominent talons create the impression of a bird of prey, rather than a bird of peace. The choice of green as a finish colour is uncommon in a religious context. It may have been chosen because green and the eagle are both associated with St. John the Evangelist.
