Salt Cellar
Salt cellars were used for centuries for holding and dispensing salt, until the advent of free flowing salt in the 1900s. The form of this example, a small circular bowl with an inwardly extended rim, is unusual. The green and brown splashes in the glaze and the stamped impressions around the exterior enhance the decorative effect; pieces such as this often sat on the table and were used on a daily basis. This salt cellar was passed down in the family of its maker, Adam Bierenstihl.
