Chest of Drawers
This chest dates from about 1860 and is the largest of the three similar examples (the others are CMH 2007.22.161 and CMH 2007.22.276). On this chest, the ebonized trim has been dropped and typical white Victorian porcelain pulls have been used, rather than glass. The edge of the top has been decorated with horizontal reeding, and the scrolled ends on the backboard mark the prevailing influence of the Empire designs of the time. It is remarkable that this form, based on Pennsylvania Chippendale designs from the late 1700s, was still being used in Ontario as late as the 1860s.
