Spindle Back Armchair
This armchair represents a form that was commonly used in many areas of Canada during the mid-1800s. It has a well-developed back with turned spindles and a shaped seat for extra comfort. An old varnish stain covers the original turquoise-green paint. Found at an estate auction for the Grant family, near Martintown in Eastern Ontario, this armchair is accompanied by an oral history reporting that it was made by Alex Gadbois and sold second-hand in 1857.
