A Scandal in New Brunswick

Five cents worth of fame

In December 1859, in anticipation of the adoption of the decimal system by New Brunswick, Charles Connell, the colony's postmaster general, ordered new cent stamps. One of them was a Five Cents stamp featuring his own portrait. Connell resigned over the debacle, and the stamps were supposedly burned. But some apparently escaped the flames.
