A Treasury Competition winner, Benjamin Cheverton proposed a stamp that could be printed repeatedly on a long narrow coil of paper. A large number of impressions could be made at the same time using a rolling press. His embossed lace-patterned design features the letters VR, the abbreviation of the Latin Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria).
