Conquering the North Atlantic

General Balbo's flying armada

General Balbo led twenty-four Savoia Marchetti SM.55X aircraft across the Atlantic in July 1933 on a mass-formation flight. They flew from Orbetello, Italy to Chicago for the Century of Progress International Exposition. This cover, addressed to His Majesty The King (George V), was carried on the return flight between Shoal Harbour, Newfoundland, and Rome in August 1933.
