Conquering the North Atlantic

Damp stamp

This cover survived the famous Hawker flight of May 18, 1919. Harry G. Hawker and his navigator, Kenneth Mackenzie-Grieve, attempted to win the Daily Mail competition by being the first aviators to cross the Atlantic on a non-stop flight. Although their Sopwith plane was forced to descend in the ocean, both Hawker and Mackenzie-Grieve were rescued by the Danish steamer Mary. The plane and the mail it carried were later salvaged by an American steamer.
