Canada Gains its Postal Autonomy

Canada Breaks New Ground

Canada packet postage

The expansion of the postal service and the changes in rates introduced in 1854 led to the need for new stamp denominations. One of the stamps, issued in 1857, was the Six Pence Sterling, which features the Chalon portrait of Queen Victoria used on the discontinued 1851 Twelve Pence. Six pence sterling was the packet letter rate per half ounce for mail sent to Great Britain from Canada.
