Montcalm embarks on a military career.
Wolfe is born on January 2 in Westerham, England.

Montcalm marries Angélique-Louise Talon
de Boulay, with whom he has ten children
(five surviving to adulthood).
1743
Wolfe first sees action at the Battle of
Dettingen in Germany.
1745–1746
Wolfe serves in Scotland during the Jacobite
Rebellion, including the Battle of Culloden.
1756
Montcalm is promoted to major-general and given command of the French army in Canada.
1756–1758
Montcalm wins victories at Forts Oswego,
William Henry and Carillon.
1758
Wolfe plays a leading role in the capture of
Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. Returning
briefly to Britain, he becomes engaged to
Katherine Lowther.
1759
On September 13, Wolfe leads the British
across the Plains of Abraham. Montcalm fails
to defend the city. Both generals die.
