At the station, Chris was met by Canadian National Railway (CNR) agents. The same day, he set out by train for his new employer’s farm in Beamsville. The farmer met him at the station and drove him home, where, to Chris’s surprise, he learned that the family was expecting the Danish wife’s brother, not him.
That night, Chris slept in the family’s barn. The next morning, the farmer’s wife drove him back to Toronto and dropped him off at Sunnyside beach, a few kilometres from Union Station.
Fortunately for Chris, a taxi stopped. Without being able to speak a word of English, Chris was able to communicate his destination “by pointing at the tracks,” and the cab driver dropped him off at Union Station.
