Kalighat, a famous pilgrimage site, is named
after the ghat (bathing place) of Kali, the furious aspect of the
consort of Shiva. Some people believe that it may be at the origin
of the name Calcutta, the city of which it is now a part. The area
around the temple to Kali is home to hundreds of families of potters
who make festival images for the city. In the nineteenth century,
this was also the centre of a style of painting for pilgrims that
depicted religious, political and social themes.
