Puri is one of the most active pilgrimage towns
in India, with its great Vaishnavite temple to Jagannath, his brother
Balabhadra and his sister Subhadra. In the villages near the town,
families of painters create a rich and distinctive array of products
for sale to pilgrims and people who love Indian art. The name
Jagannath (lord of the world) has entered other languages as
juggernaut, a reference to the great wooden chariots pulled by
devotees during the most popular festival associated with
this deity.
