The earliest forms of stone architecture in India reveal highly developed elements of architecture in wood.

Early woodworking techniques survived longest in the carved pillars, brackets, and door and window frames of homes and palaces, in temple chariots and, most dramatically, in the traditional wooden buildings of forest-rich southwest India.
