India used to be a land of kingdoms in which,
periodically, political and military power would be concentrated in
one place and alliances built to constitute an empire. The artistic
skills that created the arms, armour, costumes and symbols of power
for the courts were highly refined and patronized. Today, the histories,
myths and stories that celebrate the royal and martial traditions remain
a major motif in the lives of Indian people and a primary inspiration
for artistic expression.
