how a craftsperson continues to develop
All the Bronfman Award recipients are well established; yet they strive to
create larger and more knowledgeable audiences for their own work and for
that of other craftspeople. Robin Hopper has dedicated much of his career
to teaching, giving workshops, and writing books on the history and
technology of pottery making. Textile artist Joanna Staniszkis combines
teaching with commissioned works, many of them for public buildings.
Dedicated to the evolution and refinement of their pottery, Doucet-Saito
are seeking a wider audience through the creation of murals and of ceramics
that can be reproduced in stone and metal for a variety of public
installations. Bill Reid's studio has provided on-the-job training to a
succession of carvers and jewellers, and has been the focus for major
sculptural projects that have provoked new respect for fine craftsmanship.
