how craft skills are acquired
The experiences of Michael Wilcox, Lois Etherington Betteridge and William
Hazzard identify three very different learning approaches to craft. There
is the traditional course, that of the apprentice/master relationship,
which teaches skills within a trade; a later adaptation of this system
involves the advanced student working informally under the supervision of
a master. The present-day structured approach is provided by colleges and
universities, where the applied-arts student learns a variety of
interdisciplinary art and craft techniques. The third route is that of the
self-taught craftsperson, whose highly developed skills and
single-mindedness lead to the professional arena.
