The lid of this elaborately carved chest represents the Haida story of the first people emerging from a clamshell. These reproduction pieces in high density resin are moulded from casts of original historical Haida carvings in argillite from the Canadian Museum of History’s collection. Argillite is a soft slate-like material found only on Haida Gwaii. Haida artists have carved this important material for trade and for sale since at least the early nineteenth century. 19 x 10.25 x 9.75 cm.
