The first large group of Doukhobors to immigrate to Canada arrived in Halifax harbour on January 20, 1899. This Doukhobor bag would have been used to store bedding and household goods. The Doukhobors, a pacifist sectarian group persecuted in tsarist Russia, were part of the large influx of Eastern European settlers who came to the Canadian West at the turn of the century.
