Snow goggles

Canadian Museum of History, IX-C:4775, S97-5093-Dp1

Snow goggles like these have been used in the North for a long time. The narrow slit limits the amount of light reaching the eyes in order to avoid “snow blindness,” which can be caused by the reflection of the sun’s rays on the snow. These walrus ivory goggles date between 1250 and 1600.
