This 19th century Dakota/Lakota horse robe was collected on the Upper Missouri River. Its design includes painted calumets, concentric circles featuring Morning Star or feather motifs, buffalo hunting scenes, a camp with tipis, war scenes, buffalo being butchered, mounted riders, a mule and horses. Plains warriors decorated such objects with important images of their own lives, including war exploits, horse raids and other major events.
