In 1969, the Don’t Make a Wave Committee was formed in Vancouver to oppose U.S. underground nuclear testing at Alaska’s Amchitka Island. The explosions, some feared, would trigger earthquakes and tsunamis along the west coast. The committee failed to stop a major detonation in 1971 and the big wave never materialized, but the group emerged from its peaceful protest with a high profile and a new name: Greenpeace. The organization, now headquartered in Amsterdam, has been making its own waves ever since.
