1971

In 1969, the Don’t Make a Wave Committee was formed in Vancouver to oppose U.S. underground nuclear testing at Alaska’s Amchitka Island. The explosions, some feared, would trigger earthquakes and tsunamis along the west coast. The committee failed to stop a major detonation in 1971 and the big wave never materialized, but the group emerged from its peaceful protest with a high profile and a new name: Greenpeace. The organization, now headquartered in Amsterdam, has been making its own waves ever since.

Each day for 150 days leading up to the opening of the Canadian History Hall, we’re presenting one moment among the many that have shaped our country. Discover more of Canada’s significant historical events in the new Canadian History Hall, opening July 1, 2017.
